Autumn equinox

The autumn equinox marks the beginning of a new season and is a good moment to check in with our habits and adjust our everyday routines to a new rhythm.

After a summer full of socializing, travelling, and slightly more spontaneous routines, autumn often brings more structure, cooler mornings, and more time spent at home.

We don’t need a completely new routine or a major life change. Sometimes, a few small rituals are enough to help us enter the new season more mindfully.

That’s why we’ve put together 6 simple rituals for the autumn equinox that you can try today.

What does the autumn equinox actually represent?

The autumn equinox is the time of year when day and night are the same length. After that, days in the Northern Hemisphere gradually become shorter and nights become longer.

Because of this, the equinox is often associated with balance. Not in the sense that everything in life has to be perfectly balanced all the time, but as an opportunity to check where we’re currently putting most of our time and energy.

You can ask yourself: Where in my life could I use a little more balance?

Between work and rest.
Between giving to others and making time for yourself.
Between socializing and spending time alone.
Between the things you have to do and the things you actually want to do.

Autumn can also be a good time to think about which habits, commitments, or routines are no longer serving you and which ones you may be holding onto simply because you’re used to them.

6 simple rituals for the autumn equinox

1. Do a mini autumn reset

Take a piece of paper or a notebook and answer these three questions:

What do I want to take with me into autumn?
What do I want to leave behind?
What do I want to give more time or attention to over the next few months?

Don’t overthink your answers - simply write down whatever comes to mind first.

2. Go outside without a specific goal

A walk doesn’t always have to be measured in steps, kilometres, or calories burned.

Go outside simply to take a break from the pace of everyday life.

Notice the changes in nature, the colours, the air, the light, and the temperature. Autumn is a great time to spend more time outdoors and disconnect from screens for a while.

3. Tidy up one thing

You don’t need to clean your entire home to create a sense of a fresh start.

Choose one thing: a drawer, a wardrobe, or your desk.

Go through what you actually need and what you no longer use. Less clutter in your space often means fewer things competing for your attention.

4. Turn your morning routine into a more mindful start to the day

As mornings become colder and darker, it’s easy to slip into autopilot: alarm, phone, coffee, emails, and rushing.

Try taking a few minutes for yourself before starting your daily responsibilities. Open a window, do a few stretches, take 10 minutes to meditate, or prepare a warm drink and enjoy it without rushing.

If you’d like to cut back on coffee or simply try a different morning drink, a cup of MagicRooty can also become part of your routine.

The point isn’t to create the perfect morning. It’s simply about not starting the day immediately with tasks and screens.

5. Create a simple evening ritual

Longer autumn evenings are a good opportunity to create a calmer end to the day.

Try spending some time before bed without your phone, computer, or TV. Make yourself a herbal tea or a CalmRooty, read a few pages of a book, listen to music, do some gentle stretching, or simply sit for a while without a screen.

6. Write down what you’re grateful for

Autumn has traditionally been associated with harvest and with taking stock of what the year has already brought us.

Today, we can use the same idea as a simple gratitude ritual.

Ask yourself: What has changed for the better in my life this year?

Maybe it’s a new relationship, a project, a friendship, a habit, a decision, or something you’ve achieved.

Many of the things we wished for a few months ago quickly become part of everyday life, and we stop noticing them. That’s why it can be helpful to occasionally remind ourselves of what has already gone well.

You don’t have to change everything

Rituals don’t have to be complicated, and you don’t need a perfect morning or evening routine.

They can be very simple things:

  • your first warm drink of the morning without your phone,

  • a ten-minute walk,

  • lighting a candle at dinner,

  • journaling,

  • a short meditation or breathing exercise.

The goal isn’t to do everything at once. It’s about finding something that works for you and that you can realistically include in your everyday life.

A question for this autumn

Around the autumn equinox, take a few minutes to ask yourself:

What do I want less of this autumn and what do I want more of?

You don’t need to change your whole life just because a new season has started. Sometimes it’s enough to adjust a few habits, make more time for yourself, and create routines that make your everyday life feel better.

Welcome, autumn. 🍂
